Based on systematic research into the logic of motion distortion and the error conditions of LiDAR, I developed a device utilising mobile 3D scanning technology to reconstruct the dome of St Ignatius. Commencing with the site’s massing model, I derived the fundamental architectural programme. Subsequently, working from partial architectural sections, I directly generated entirely new architectural details from the distorted scan data.

This approach transcends conventional architectural frameworks, where spatial arrangements are no longer constrained by physical environments but instead determined by distant locations associated with undelivered letters within the ‘Museum of Dead Letters’. Internally, the project unfolds through a series of abstract spatial elements, each originating from iterative scanning and design of a 1:20 scale CNC model. This process transforms accumulated scanning ‘errors’ into a repeatable methodology for spatial creation.

Through a hybrid choreography of smartphone interface and spatial installation, the project overlays a responsive digital layer onto the project, turning the building into an active sensing device and staging ground for an immersive, real-time experience.

The voids that permeate the dead letters mark the impossibility of instantaneous movement between distant geographies, foregrounding the latency, loss and slippage inherent in written communication. Distance, absence, presence and emptiness are no longer opposites but interdependent conditions; here, “absence” becomes a material that structures how the work is read, remembered and inhabited.
